St John’s Chambers offers expertise in the field of Private International Law, with members able to advise on issues relating to jurisdiction, choice of law, and the cross-border recognition and enforcement of judgments and arbitral awards. Our members also have experience of obtaining a range of interim relief in relation to international litigation, including freezing orders, anti-suit injunctions, service of process matters, and a range of applications to the courts of the seat or other supervisory institutions in international arbitrations.
The team also have considerable experience of advising and acting in relation to offshore trusts, wills and succession involving international elements, and ancillary relief or other matrimonial matters with a cross-border dimension.
Barristers frequently act in relation to matters governed by the Brussels I and Rome I and II Regulations and have provided in-house guidance and training in respect of the same. Members also lecture in the fields of private international law and international commercial arbitration at the University of Bristol.
We regularly act in litigation in the Channel Islands and further afield, with experience of substantial disputes in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Kenya, New York, Delaware, Central and Southern America and Dubai, as well as in most European jurisdictions and a number of Caribbean offshore centres.
Our barristers also advise on the application of English substantive and private international law in foreign proceedings, and have provided expert evidence on the content and effect of English law in foreign litigation.

Some members of the team are also available to act, where appropriate, for members of the public, as well as commercial and non-commercial organisations, under the Public Access scheme. Read more.

The team delivers workshops and seminars in Chambers and regional centres. We also provide training on behalf of local Law Societies and in conjunction with solicitors firms.
